COURSE
ROUTING
As per a decision of the 2009 AGM, a number
of different course routings are to be trialled by members before making
a final decision on the course layout at the 2010 AGM.
For a number of months we have trialled starting on the old 14th (new
teebox) then to old 15th etc.
Last week we trialled starting on the old 17th, then old 18th, to old
14th and onwards as above. It was intended to continue with this trial
for a month, however there was an overwhelming negative reaction from
members to this layout. As a result, the Captain, following consultation
with members and members of the Committee, decided to revert to the first
trial layout for the time being.
Later this year a third trial layout will be tested. This involves starting
on the old 14th, them playing old 13th (par 5), then the old 2nd and on
out into the country. After playing the old 9th (now the 12th) players
will walk down the path past Coollattin House and old 10th to the old
11th tee (par 5). Play old 11th (now 13th); new hole behind garden; garden;
old 15th; walk along path to 17th and finish as usual.
This proposed layout has the advantage of giving access to the toilets
and drinking water after 12 holes and again after 16 holes thus saving
the Club the expense of erecting toilets out the course. In addition,
as the old 10th and old 16th (both currently out of play) are easily accessible
they can be used as alternate holes if a decision is made to take any
hole(s) out of play temporarily during the year.
This routing will be trialled in October for the rest of the year.
PADDY MYERS WINS CAPTAIN'S PRIZE
In a very exciting finish
which came down to the very last hole of the 45 played, Paddy Myers won
his 2nd Captain's Prize in 4 years when he took Stephen McGuinness's prize
on a countback from Tom Ryan, by 1/2 stroke from Liam Kavanagh who put
in a great final 9 holes, and by 1 from Richie Walshe. Paddy, Tom and
Richie were in the last group and provided great excitement for the large
group of members following the event on a lovely evening. It is notable
that the winning score was 176 nett over the 45 holes whereas the winning
score in 2008 for Jack Lynch's prize was 164.5 - testament to the increased
difficulty of the course following the introduction of the three new holes
and several new tees. The Gross was won by Ronan Doyle on 156 versus the
winning gross in 2008 of 140. Tougher for everyone!!

CAPTAIN'S PRIZE DRAW
- DAY 2.
Day 1 of Stephen McGuinness's Captain's
Prize (Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th August) resulted in some ... interesting
... scores over the new course. Fair to say that the 374 members who competed
found the new course challenging.
The Captain has decided that the cut will
be at 77 nett. There will be a non-qualifiers competition on Saturday
15th and the top three prizewinners from that competition will also qualify,
carrying forward their scores from Day 1.
SO ... 78 players plus 3 from next Saturday
will tee it up for Day 2.
The Draw for Day 2 is available for download HERE
Like every other year, a number of qualifiers
will be unable to play because of prior commitments, shock at having qualified
in the first place, trauma from multiple duffed chips and three-putts
from Day 1 etc. So, withdrawals from the timesheet will be offered to
those who were cut in the order in which they finished. See table below.
If you qualified or if you are on the replacement
list and can't play, please ring the Club on 053 94 29125 and let us know.
(PS - the Mr. R. Walshe who is leading
is not our esteemed Honorary Treasurer, rather it is his far better looking
and more talented (golf-wise) son.)

THE
FOLLOWING LOCAL RULES HAVE BEEN ADOPTED:
(1)
DISTANCE MEASURING DEVICES
For
play in Competitions run by this club a player may obtain distance information
by using a device that measures distance only. If, during a stipulated
round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge
or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g. gradient,
wind speed, temperature, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3,
for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such
additional function is actually used.
(2)
EMBEDDED BALL THROUGH THE GREEN
A
ball embedded in its own pitchmark, through the green, may be lifted,
cleaned and dropped within 1 clublength of its original position without
penalty.
[Explanatory
note on (2). Previously under the rules of golf, a ball had to be embedded
in its own pitchmark on a closely mown area (tee, fairway, path cut in
the rough). This local rule, recommended by the GUI, has the effect of
adding the rough to the area where a ball embedded in its own pitchmark
may be lifted, cleaned and dropped. Note that a ball in a hazard can never
be touched before playing. You must be certain that the ball is embedded
in its own pitchmark - if in doubt, play it as it lies.]
